How to Commission an Art Quilt

Commissioning an art quilt begins with a simple three-step process: you select the theme, the main colors, and the approximate size of the finished work. While making these choices consider where you plan to place the quilt. Because ultraviolet rays will fade and damage fabric, the quilt should not be in direct sunlight or in an area of bright reflected light.

To prepare a preliminary design I require a non-refundable deposit of $100, after which I will develop a colored pencil sketch* showing a proposed design and colors. Along with the sketch and an inital contract, I will provide some fabric swatches that you may audition in the location where you plan to display the quilt. The contract will specify the details of the art quilt, a completion schedule and the payment schedule.

Once the design is approved, you return a copy of the signed contract to me along with 50% of the total cost of the quilt (minus the $100 design fee). The final payment is due when the work is ready to be delivered to you.

*The paper sketch is truly just a sketch and not a work of art. Remember, fiber is my medium and in order to create a quilt I work on a flannel design board, auditioning many fabrics and moving the elements until the final design is created. The sketch gives both of us a chance to determine the direction to be taken rather than the final destination of the quilt.
